There is something beautifully bittersweet about August. It is the month that seems to exist between two worlds, the carefree energy of summer and the quiet invitation of a new beginning. While January is often celebrated as the season of fresh starts, August carries a gentler, wiser kind of reset. It doesn’t ask us to become someone new, instead, it invites us to remember who we are.

August is a month of abundance. Gardens are overflowing, the days are warm, and nature is offering the final flourish of its growing season. It reminds us that growth is rarely instant. The seeds planted months ago are now bearing fruit, encouraging us to pause and notice how far we’ve come before rushing towards what’s next.

This is also a month of transition. The light begins to soften, mornings feel a little cooler, and there is an almost imperceptible shift in the air. Change arrives quietly, reminding us that every season has its purpose. Rather than resisting change, August teaches us to move with it gracefully. It asks us to release what has become heavy, celebrate what has blossomed, and prepare our hearts for the next chapter.

Spiritually, August encourages reflection. It is an opportunity to take inventory of your life with compassion rather than criticism.

Even the most vibrant flowers begin to slow. Rest is not the opposite of progress, it is part of it. Creating moments of stillness allows wisdom to emerge and intuition to speak more clearly.

As the month unfolds, consider what you wish to carry into the final months of the year. There is still time to honour the intentions you set earlier, and there is equal permission to rewrite them entirely. Life is not about staying committed to old versions of ourselves. It is about growing into new ones.

As you move through August, gift yourself time to reflect with honesty and kindness. Use these prompts slowly, returning to the ones that resonate most deeply.

An August Reset Ritual

Choose an evening or quiet morning where you can be undisturbed for an hour. Light a candle, make your favourite herbal tea, and put your phone away. Allow this time to belong entirely to you.

Begin by taking several slow breaths, allowing your shoulders to soften and your mind to settle. Reflect on the months that have passed. Notice what has gone well, what challenged you, and what lessons have quietly shaped you. Write these reflections in your journal without editing yourself.

Next, create two lists. On one page, write everything you are ready to release: the self-doubt, perfectionism, overthinking, limiting beliefs, relationships or commitments that no longer align. On another page, write what you wish to welcome into your life during the remainder of the year: peace, confidence, joy, creativity, meaningful connections, financial abundance, or whatever feels true for you.

If it feels meaningful, safely tear up or burn the release list as a symbolic act of letting go. Then read your intentions aloud. Speak them with belief rather than certainty. You are planting seeds, not demanding outcomes.

Finish your ritual by placing one hand over your heart and one over your stomach. Thank yourself for everything you’ve navigated this year. You have survived days you once worried about, celebrated moments you once dreamed of, and become wiser through every experience.

End by choosing one small action you can take tomorrow that honours the life you’re creating. Real transformation is built through consistent, loving steps rather than dramatic change.

May August be your invitation to breathe more deeply, trust yourself more fully, and welcome the quiet magic that lives in slowing down. Let it remind you that every ending contains the seed of a beautiful beginning.

‘Celebration Time’

Lughnasad - on the 1st Aug. A a celebration of the first grain harvest - a time for gathering and giving thanks for the abundance all around us. Lughnasadh is a time for reaping what we have sown throughout the past few months. Lammas is the halfway point between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox. At this point in the year, the days are still longer than the nights but not for much longer.

Ritual: Celebration

On this Sabbath, I love to take this opportunity to celebrate myself. We, women, hardly ever stop and reflect and see how far we have come, so now is a great time to celebrate and honour your accomplishments. I like to treat myself to a beautiful picnic, which I take out into nature with my journal. For me, this is a beautiful way to celebrate.

While I am enjoying my picnic, I usually think about three amazing things I have done this year. It doesn’t matter how big or small they are, I just sit in the energy of joy and celebration for myself.

I invite you to do the same. Make a beautiful set up for your picnic, grab your journal and pen. Ask yourself:

What does it feel like to celebrate yourself?

Does it feel uncomfortable?

Are you coming up with all the things you wish you’d accomplished but haven’t yet or all the things you still “need” to do?

When was the last time you celebrated yourself?

Now write in your journal what has come up for you. Step back for a moment while you feel into what you have accomplished. It’s time to harvest your celebrations.

Summer invites us to slow down, to notice the little things, and to create moments that feel enchanted. For me, a Practical Magic summer has never been about perfection or elaborate rituals, it is about finding the sacred in the everyday. It is the scent of herbs drying by the window, bare feet on warm grass, flowers gathered from the garden, homemade treats shared around the table, and a home filled with the laughter and stories of those we love.

With the children home from school, this is the perfect time to bring a little more intention into the rhythm of family life. The Aunts from Practical Magic always understood that magic lived in the ordinary: a nourishing meal, a garden tended with care, a candle glowing in the evening, a remedy made with loving hands. A magical summer does not require a dramatic transformation. It begins with small rituals that remind us that our homes are living, breathing places where memories are made.

In my early twenties and throughout my thirties, I lived a stressful life that, at the time, I believed was completely normal. I was finishing my education, preparing to begin my career in fashion design, and building a life with my partner, who is now my husband. I was navigating who I was, creating a future with someone I loved, while also carrying the emotional weight of my relationship with my parents.

I love my parents deeply, but they were very different from most of the parents I knew growing up. By my mid-twenties, I had become the parent in our relationship. I was caring for my own parents while also raising my first child. By the time I had my second child at the age of 27, I had completely lost myself. I was experiencing panic attacks, my mental health had reached its lowest point, and I was constantly putting everyone else’s needs before my own. I spent my days people-pleasing, saying yes when I wanted to say no, and trying to hold everything together until I was completely burnt out. Whenever I asked for help or spoke about how I was feeling, it was seen as weakness or failure.

One night, I reached my lowest point. It was during that time that I experienced something that completely changed my life. This may sound unusual to some, but I truly believe I was visited by my uncle, who had passed away when I was sixteen. He showed me what I still had to live for and reminded me how extraordinary life really is. From that moment, my spiritual gifts became stronger, and I began recognising that I could sense things I had previously ignored. As a practising witch, I started seeking the magic that exists in everyday life. I became more aware, more present, and began discovering who I had become. Looking back, I believe that was the first time I consciously chose to return home to myself.

Since that period, when I believed I was at my lowest, life has continued to bring challenges. I have lived through a decade-long journey with cancer and survived a near-death experience. Those experiences were incredibly difficult, yet the practices that carried me through remained the same. I sought the magic in everyday moments. I found comfort in ritual, grounded myself in the present moment, listened to my inner truth, and allowed myself to move forward slowly, one step at a time.

Many of my friends and my online community describe me as “Miss Positive.” They are right, I do choose to see the beauty and possibility in life. However, positivity does not mean pretending everything is fine. I never bypass the darkness. I allow myself to move through it, to feel it, to learn from it, and then to emerge on the other side. That has become one of life’s greatest lessons for me.

Since my thirties, I have become deeply aware of how important my connection to life’s magic truly is. I have intentionally built my life around nurturing that connection. Whenever I begin to feel disconnected or out of alignment, I know I need to return home to myself. Meditation has become one of the most powerful ways I reconnect because it allows me to truly feel the magic rather than simply think about it.

When we slow down and begin noticing life, everything becomes magical. The birds quietly going about their day, the changing seasons, the sounds of nature, a stranger’s smile, meaningful conversations, shared laughter, moments of celebration, watching the sunset, gazing at the stars, or sitting beneath the moon all remind us how extraordinary life is. Losing yourself in a beautiful book, baking a cake while the comforting aroma fills your home, holding your children’s tiny hands as they ask innocent questions about the world, or simply cuddling your dog—these moments are filled with magic. We often overlook them because we are moving too quickly.

Finding yourself, discovering who you have become, understanding your values, recognising what lights you up, identifying what brings you joy, and expressing yourself authentically are some of the greatest medicines life can offer. It has helped me feel happier, healthier and more deeply connected to myself.

So, I often ask myself, “What does my soul need?”

For me, the answer is usually simple.

My soul needs:

- Moments of stillness throughout the day, a space to simply be.

- Meaningful conversations and laughter,

- Creativity to write, draw, paint, bake, take photographs, and style our home.

- To be in nature and watch the seasons flow,

- Love to surround myself with the things that bring me joy,

- I have an obsession with soft fabrics, from cheesecloth to linens,

- Learning and discovery. I love history.

- Anything and everything that involves magic, witchcraft, and the paranormal.

- Stories and fairytales.

To Find Your Magic

Do the things that make you feel good. Give yourself permission to reconnect with the magic because it has never left you—it has always been there. Whenever I have a day where I feel out of alignment, I gently ask myself why. Is this truly how I feel, or am I simply exhausted? If I am drained, what has caused it? If it is my truth, what is it trying to teach me? Then I ask myself the most important question of all: How can I return home to Emma? That is how I realign with my magical self.

We live in a world where we are constantly encouraged to compare our lives with everyone else’s through the screens we carry everywhere we go. It is no wonder so many of us feel disconnected from ourselves and lose sight of our own magic. We were never meant to live this way.

Spend less time on your phone. Step outside. Notice the world around you. Sit quietly with yourself and notice the world within you. There is so much beauty surrounding us every single day, but we often miss it because we are simply too busy to see it.

One of my favourite rituals is beautifully simple. I light a white candle, make a cup of tea, sit quietly in my garden, and listen. I listen to the birds, the breeze, the leaves, and most importantly, I listen to myself.

The magic has never left you. It lives within you and is always waiting for you to return home.

Sometimes we become so focused on our manifestations that we end up holding on too tightly. We can see what we desire right in front of us, yet it feels just out of reach. Throughout the summer season, many of our ancestors lived in close relationship with the land, following the rhythms of nature rather than the calendar. Summer was a time of abundance, growth, gathering, and gratitude. Days were spent tending crops, harvesting herbs, preserving food, caring for animals, and making the most of the long daylight hours.

For traditional folk practitioners and the wise women and cunning folk of the villages, summer carried a special kind of magic. It was a season when the earth was at its most fertile, the sun at its strongest, and the healing properties of plants were believed to be at their peak. Herbs such as St. John’s Wort, mugwort, yarrow, and vervain were gathered around midsummer, dried carefully, and stored to support both healing and spiritual practices throughout the darker months ahead.

Around the Summer Solstice, communities gathered to celebrate with bonfires, music, dancing, storytelling, and shared meals. Fire symbolised protection, purification, and the life-giving power of the sun. Families and neighbours stayed outdoors long into the light-filled evenings, celebrating the abundance that surrounded them and giving thanks for another turning of the Wheel of the Year.

Summer was also a season of pilgrimage. People travelled to sacred wells, rivers, coastlines, ancient stones, and woodland clearings to honour the spirits of the land. Water and sunlight together were seen as powerful forces of healing, cleansing, and renewal. These places were not simply beautiful landscapes; they were living spaces where people felt deeply connected to nature, their ancestors, and the unseen world.

The humble daisy is often overlooked, but in traditional folk magic it has long been associated with innocence, joy, new beginnings and the quiet magic of nature. It reminds us that not all powerful magic has to be dramatic. Sometimes the smallest flowers carry the gentlest wisdom.

Here are some beautiful ways to work with daisies in your practice:

Protection

Daisies have been used in European folk traditions as protective flowers. Place a small bunch by your front door or weave them into a wreath to invite peaceful energy into your home.

New Beginnings

Because daisies are among the first flowers to bloom in spring, they symbolise fresh starts. Add them to a ritual when you’re beginning a new chapter, setting intentions or releasing what no longer serves you.

Heart Healing

Daisies carry a soft, nurturing energy. Create a small altar with fresh daisies, a white candle and a journal. Sit quietly and ask yourself, “What part of me is ready to bloom again?”

Divination

The childhood game of pulling petals while asking a question has its roots in simple folk divination. Rather than asking, “They love me, they love me not,” you might ask a yes or no question and allow the final petal to offer symbolic guidance. Treat it as a reflective practice rather than a way to predict the future.

Fairy Magic

In folklore, daisies are often linked with the fae. Leave a daisy beneath an old tree or at the edge of a wild meadow as an offering of gratitude to the spirits of the land. Only do this where it’s appropriate and avoid leaving anything that could harm wildlife.

Dream Work

Place a few dried daisy heads in a small sachet beneath your pillow with the intention of inviting peaceful dreams and gentle insight.

Solar Energy

Although white in colour, the bright yellow centre connects the daisy with the Sun. Work with daisies during the day to welcome optimism, confidence and abundance into your life.

Gratitude Magic

Pick a single daisy, hold it in your hands and speak aloud three things you’re grateful for. Afterwards, return it to the earth with thanks.

Many people carry a deep desire to expand their lives and express their gifts more fully. They want to create more abundance, feel more visible and experience a deeper sense of purpose. Yet beneath that desire, there is often an invisible resistance pulling them back toward hiding and shrinking and self-doubt.

This resistance is not laziness and it is not failure. It is usually the nervous system attempting to protect the person from what it once learned was unsafe.

For many people, being fully seen did not feel safe growing up. Visibility may have brought criticism, pressure, rejection and emotional exposure. Speaking up may have led to shame. Success may have created jealousy or overwhelming expectations. Authentic expression may have threatened a sense of belonging or connection.

Over time, the subconscious mind begins forming protective beliefs. These beliefs often sound like:
“It is safer to stay small.”
“If I am truly seen, I may be rejected.”
“I must be perfect before I share my gifts.”
“If I shine too brightly, I could lose love or safety.”

These patterns do not disappear simply because a person wants a different life. The subconscious responds more to repetition and emotional experience than to intellectual understanding. Real transformation happens when the body begins experiencing safety in new ways.

The nervous system must learn that visibility, authenticity and expansion are no longer threats.

One of the most important shifts in this process is separating worthiness from performance. Many people unconsciously believe they are only worthy when they achieve and help and produce and succeed. This creates constant pressure because self-worth becomes dependent on external validation.

True healing begins when a person practices being worthy without needing to earn it first.

This can happen in small daily moments. It may look like speaking honestly without overexplaining. It may look like resting without guilt. It may look like creating something imperfect and sharing it anyway. It may look like allowing yourself to take up space without apologising for your existence.

These moments teach the nervous system a new truth:
“I do not need to prove my value to deserve love and belonging.”

Another important part of this process is nervous system regulation. Many people try to force themselves into visibility while their bodies are still in a state of fear or hypervigilance. Then every act of expression feels exhausting and unsafe.

Instead of asking how to become fearless, it is more helpful to ask:
“How can I stay connected to myself while being seen?”

Before expressing yourself, try slowing your breathing and relaxing your shoulders and grounding your body. Feel your feet against the floor. Look around your environment and remind yourself that this moment is not the past.

The body often reacts to present opportunities through the lens of old experiences. Gentle regulation helps interrupt this cycle.

It is also important to stop treating your gifts like something you must constantly prove. Gifts become distorted when they are used only to gain approval. The deeper purpose of your gifts is not performance. It is contribution, truth and connection.

Ask yourself:
“What wants to move through me?”
“What feels deeply authentic for me to express?”
“How might my voice help someone else feel less alone?”

Purpose often emerges naturally when people stop performing and begin expressing what is real.

Healing the fear of visibility also requires gradual exposure. The nervous system changes through small experiences of safety. You do not need to force yourself into massive expansion overnight.

You can begin by sharing one honest thought. You can create imperfectly. You can allow trusted people to witness your work. You can practice receiving compliments without dismissing them. You can celebrate completion instead of perfection.

Each small experience becomes evidence that it is safe to exist more fully.

Many people also discover that playing small has become part of their identity. Staying hidden may protect them from judgment, pressure and disappointment. It may even protect them from outgrowing relationships or familiar environments.

This is why deeper healing requires honesty.

Ask yourself:
“If I fully embodied my gifts what am I afraid might happen?”
“What part of me still believes visibility is dangerous?”
“What would change in my life if I stopped hiding?”

These questions often reveal the deeper fears beneath procrastination and self-sabotage.

Manifestation becomes more natural when the subconscious mind and nervous system and daily actions begin aligning with one another. When one part of the self desires expansion while another part fears it the result is internal conflict.

As the nervous system begins feeling safer your energy becomes less fragmented. You hesitate less. You trust yourself more. Your expression becomes clearer and more consistent.

This is not about becoming someone completely different. It is about becoming more deeply aligned with who you already are beneath fear and conditioning.

Your gifts do not become valuable only when recognised by others. Their value exists before applause and before validation and before success.

The world does not need a more perfect version of you. It needs the version of you that is real and grounded and willing to be seen.

Joy is often underestimated as a spiritual practice. We can become so focused on healing, learning and self-development that we forget joy is part of the journey too. July reminds us that joy raises our energy, nourishes our spirit, and reconnects us with our natural state of abundance.

This month, consider:

• What makes you lose track of time?

• What lights you up?

• What activities leave you feeling energised rather than depleted?

Your joy matters.

Following it is not selfish; it’s a form of self-honouring.

Trusting Your Inner Wisdom

The longer days encourage clarity and illumination. They reveal what has been hidden and shine light on areas that require attention.

This is a powerful month to listen to your intuition.

As a witch and intuitive guide, I work with energy. The energy of the world around us, the energy within each of us, and the unseen energy that exists beyond what we can physically touch. It has become the foundation of the work I do.

In my most requested one-to-one session, the Guidance Medicine Reading, I connect with my client’s spiritual team. I experience this as a gathering of ancestors, spirit guides, higher-dimensional beings and loved ones who have passed into spirit. At the same time, I work alongside my own spiritual team, who help me interpret and understand what I am shown.

The information comes in many different ways. Sometimes it feels like watching a film in my mind. I see scenes unfolding, possible paths someone may take, or opportunities they haven’t yet noticed. At other times I hear words or messages that need to be shared. Often, loved ones step forward simply to let someone know they are still present, watching over them with love.

Every reading is completely unique.

Sometimes I meet the souls of babies who are waiting to join a family. Sometimes beloved pets appear, still full of personality. Other times I am shown important chapters from a person’s life, moments of heartbreak, transformation, or profound change that have shaped who they are today.

One of the things I love most about this work is how often it brings people back to their own intuition.

It is incredibly common for a client to laugh and say, “I literally wrote that down to ask you,” or, “That’s exactly what my intuition has been telling me.” Those moments make me smile every time. I don’t see my role as telling someone what to do. Instead, I see myself as offering confirmation, clarity and reassurance. It’s like wrapping someone’s intuition in a warm hug so they can move forward with confidence.

I know this may sound a little “woo” if you’ve never experienced this kind of work before. But for those who have, it often feels surprisingly natural, as though they are simply remembering something they already knew deep inside.

Some clients visit every month. Others return once a year, or only when life reaches a crossroads and they need guidance the most.

People often ask me if I remember their readings afterwards. The truth is, I rarely do. Once the session is complete, I let it go. I have learned that this is the healthiest way for me to work.

Channeling is deeply rewarding, but it is also one of the most physically demanding things I have ever done. One client may be celebrating exciting new beginnings, while the next is carrying unimaginable grief or navigating trauma. Moving between those worlds requires me to care for my own energy with great intention. It is one of the reasons I only offer a limited number of Guidance Medicine Readings each month.

This week I found myself reflecting on some of the extraordinary moments I have witnessed through these sessions and I thought I would share this with you.

One that has stayed with me from last week was a young woman who came to me feeling completely lost. She had recently started a small clothing business and was worried it wasn’t going to succeed. As she spoke, I could feel how much joy the creative side of the business brought her.

Before she could continue, her guides interrupted.

Suddenly I was standing in my mind beside a large wooden table covered in beautiful cotton fabric somewhere in India. I watched skilled hands creating traditional block prints. Then the scene changed. I saw small children getting ready for bed, dressed in soft, beautifully printed pyjamas, curled up on their mothers’ laps.

I looked at her and asked, “Do you have a business making Indian block-print cotton pyjamas?”

She smiled immediately.

“Yes,” she replied. “I do.”

She admitted she had been worrying constantly about whether the business would survive. She loved the designing, creating, and working with the makers, but she was afraid it wouldn’t be enough.

I asked her guides to show me what came next.

The answer wasn’t about changing her products at all.

They showed me that people needed to see her. To hear her voice. To understand the love, intention, and craftsmanship behind what she was creating. She had such a gentle, calming presence, and her guides made it clear that her passion was part of the brand. They also showed me a few creative ideas that could elevate her business, although those are between us.

As I shared what I was seeing, I watched her whole face change. The worry softened. Her eyes lit up. By the end of the reading she wasn’t talking about whether her business would survive anymore. She was talking about creating again.

That is what I treasure most about this work.

It isn’t about predicting every detail of the future. It is about helping someone reconnect with themselves. Sometimes all we need is a little confirmation that the quiet voice inside us has been right all along.

I grew up in a family with deeply mystical parents. Connecting with spirit was never something that was questioned, feared, or dismissed. I was never told I was imagining things, nor was I taught that communicating with the dead was wrong. Because of that, it became a natural part of my life and something I never learned to switch off.

As I got older, however, I began to realise that not everyone shared the same perspective. What had always felt normal to me was often labelled as “woo-woo,” strange, or even weird by others. In my twenties, I decided to try and shut it down. I often joke that I tried to “put spirit in a box.” I stopped actively engaging with it and tried to ignore the signs and sensations.

The problem was that spirit didn’t disappear.

I would walk into a house and immediately sense a presence. Sometimes I would see someone standing in a room. Other times I would feel an energy so strongly that I couldn’t ignore it. No matter how much I tried to close the door, the connection remained.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see on social media is the idea that mediumship is reserved for a select few people or that you need to reach some elevated spiritual state before you can connect with spirit.

That simply hasn’t been my experience.

Over the years, I have taught many people how to reconnect with their intuitive abilities and strengthen their connection to the spirit world. What I’ve learned is that this ability is not exclusive. It is a gift. but it is a gift we all possess.

Just as everyone has the potential to learn music, art, or a new language, we all have spiritual abilities that can be developed through practice, patience, and trust.

Trust is perhaps the most important part of all. Most people dismiss their experiences because they doubt themselves. They question what they saw, heard, felt, or knew. The more we learn to trust our intuition, the clearer those connections can become.

Many people also tell me they are frightened by the idea of spirit communication. I believe much of that fear comes from movies, television, and popular culture. We are often taught to associate spirit with horror, hauntings, and fear.

The reality is usually very different.

Just as there are all kinds of people in the physical world, there are many different energies in the spiritual world. I am not suggesting that difficult spiritual experiences never happen, but genuine hauntings are far rarer than people imagine.

Most often, what people are sensing is their spiritual team: spirit guides, ancestors, loved ones who have passed over, and other higher beings who support us throughout our lives.

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about intuition is that when something is truly aligned, it will feel easy, calm and immediately certain. But in my experience, alignment often feels terrifying before it feels peaceful.

Why?

Because true alignment asks you to become more of yourself.

For many people, that means confronting years of conditioning, fear, survival patterns and identities that were built around safety rather than authenticity.

So many people have spent their lives becoming who they thought they needed to be in order to feel accepted, successful, loved, or secure.

They chose the sensible path, the path that made money, that looked good externally and most probably the path that made other people comfortable. But eventually, something starts to feel off, because the soul always seeks truth.

This is something I witness constantly within my Guidance Medicine Readings.

People often come to me believing they need someone to tell them what to do. But most of the time, what actually happens is confirmation. Their deeper self already knows what is no longer aligned. They already know what they are craving, resisting, avoiding, or being called toward.

What they need is permission to trust it.

When I sit with clients, I can often feel almost immediately where energy is being forced, where fear is interfering with alignment, or where someone has disconnected from their own knowing in order to prioritise logic, expectation, or external validation.

And this is important:
Fear does not always mean stop.

Sometimes fear appears because you are approaching a version of yourself you have never fully allowed yourself to become.

Maybe you are being asked to own your intuition.
Your spiritual gifts.
Your voice.
Your visibility.
Your leadership.
Your creativity.
Your intelligence.

Maybe you are finally being called to stop shrinking yourself.

That can feel deeply uncomfortable if you have spent years learning that those parts of you were “too much,” unrealistic, unsafe, or unacceptable.

This is why guidance matters, not because someone else knows your life better than you do. But because sometimes we need support seeing clearly through the noise of fear, doubt, conditioning, and survival.

Living with intention, for me, is not about striving for perfection or holding myself to an ideal that sits just out of reach. It is about awareness. It is about recognising that everything, every thought I entertain, every object I bring into my home, every small action I take, carries a certain energy. More importantly, it is about remembering that I have a say in how that energy flows. Intention turns ordinary life into something more conscious, more rooted, more alive. It softens the rush of the everyday and replaces it with a quiet sense of purpose.

In my daily life, intention shows up in the way I care for my home. I have learned to notice subtle shifts in atmosphere, the heaviness that can settle into a room, the feeling of stagnation that lingers without explanation. I no longer ignore these sensations. Instead, I respond to them gently. Sometimes that looks like opening windows and letting fresh air move through. Sometimes it’s as simple as lighting a candle. But even that small act is never automatic. When I strike the match, I pause. I think about what I am inviting in, like calling in warmth, calm, clarity and I allow that moment to land. The flame becomes more than light; it becomes a marker of presence.

The internet is always trying to convince women that a beautiful life exists somewhere else. Somewhere just beyond reach. One more transformation away, one more healing journey, one more product or one more version of ourselves that is younger, thinner, softer, more spiritual, more evolved, more productive, more desirable.

We are constantly being told there is something to fix.

Even spirituality has become tangled in this idea that we must endlessly transcend ourselves, or raise our frequency to a point that THEN we are good enough. Or always manifesting and manifest harder. Heal faster, become lighter, brighter and better. As though being human is something we should grow out of.

Maybe there is nothing wrong with us. Maybe we were never meant to spend our lives at war with ourselves. Maybe the deepest kind of magic is not becoming someone else entirely, but returning to who we already are beneath all the noise. Beneath the performance. Beneath the pressure to optimise every inch of our existence.

I think it is beautiful simply being here, as we are in our changing bodies and ageing faces. In our everyday lives, with the kettle boiling, the washing not yet done, and the garden growing wild outside the window.

The seasons move through nature without apology. The trees do not panic when their leaves begin to turn. The moon does not beg to remain full forever. Yet women are taught to fear every sign that they are changing.

Ageing is not a failure of beauty; it is evidence of life.

There is wisdom that only arrives through living. It arrives through the heartbreaks, through the loss, the becoming and through surviving long enough to soften into yourself.

What if we stopped chasing a fantasy version of life and started noticing the one already in front of us?

What if we allowed ourselves to enjoy our lives now instead of constantly preparing for some future version that finally feels worthy?

To be authentic, to create because we love it, to rest without guilt, to wear what we want, to laugh loudly, to move slowly,to honour the seasons we are in instead of trying to force ourselves into bloom all year round.

I wonder if that is the real return?

Not escaping this life, or transcending to a higher place or frequency, but fully inhabiting it.

For the last year and a half I’ve been quietly writing my first novel. A story rooted in Scotland, 1597, during the witch trials, where magic, sisterhood, love, and prophecy collide.

Over 100,000 words later, through tears, joy, and every kind of doubt, I’ve finished my first draft. As a dyslexic writer, this has been one of the hardest and most meaningful journeys of my life.

Now I’m on draft two, I’m not rushing it, just living it.

There comes a point in many spiritual journeys when everything suddenly feels quiet.

The rituals that once felt powerful begin to feel empty, the tarot cards sit untouched for weeks, candles remain unlit and your meditation becomes harder to return to. You feel the sense of connection you once felt so naturally seems distant or completely gone.

For many witches, this experience can feel deeply unsettling.

You may wonder if you’ve lost your intuition.
If you’re no longer “spiritual enough.”
If the magic has somehow disappeared from your life.

But spiritual quietness is far more common than most people talk about.

In fact, almost every long-term spiritual practitioner experiences periods where their connection feels weaker, slower, or harder to access. The problem is that social media often shows only the inspired moments: beautiful altars, full moon rituals, endless motivation and deep intuitive downloads. Rarely do we see the quieter seasons where someone feels disconnected, tired, doubtful, or emotionally numb.

I feel that spiritual practice moves in cycles, just like nature does.

There are seasons of expansion and seasons of rest. Seasons where intuition feels loud and immediate and seasons where it becomes quieter and asks for patience instead of certainty.

Sometimes the silence itself is part of the practice.

Today I wanted to share something with you in real time that I find is very magical.

Every now and then, a plant appears exactly where you weren’t expecting it and if you’re a witch, it’s hard not to pause and wonder. Recently, I have been watching a plant quickly grow just in front of our house. A large fennel plant appeared outside my front door, growing boldly and beautifully as though it had always belonged there. While there is undoubtedly a practical explanation, fennel is famous for enthusiastically self-seeding wherever conditions suit it; there is also something deeply magical about its arrival.

One of the things I love most about witchcraft is that it allows room for both truths to exist side by side. A plant can arrive because a seed found fertile soil and it can also arrive carrying a message. Nature speaks in symbols as much as it does in science.

Fennel has a long and fascinating history in magic and herbal traditions. For centuries, it has been associated with protection, courage, clarity, and the ability to see beyond illusion. In many parts of Europe, fennel was hung above doorways or placed near entrances to ward off unwanted influences and keep negative energies at bay. Its strong scent and vigorous growth made it a natural symbol of energetic protection, creating boundaries without closing the door entirely.

That symbolism feels especially significant when fennel chooses to grow near the entrance to a home. The front door is more than just a physical threshold; it represents what we allow into our lives and how we present ourselves to the world. A flourishing fennel plant growing there can feel like a reminder to protect your energy, trust your instincts, and stand confidently in your own space.

In magical practice, fennel has long been used for protection work, purification, psychic development and strengthening intuition. It has also been carried for courage and self-belief, particularly during periods of transition or change. I like the fennel’s energy; it doesn’t shrink itself or ask permission to take up space. It simply grows.

There is also an older thread of folklore that links fennel to hidden knowledge and revelation. Some traditions believed it could help uncover what was concealed, whether that was a hidden truth, a deeper spiritual insight, or wisdom already waiting within. For witches walking a path of self-discovery, that symbolism can feel particularly meaningful.

Perhaps that is why this fennel’s arrival feels so powerful to me. It arrives with an energy of expansion, visibility and self-trust. It reminds me that growth doesn’t always happen quietly. Sometimes we are being called to step forward, to be seen, to share our voice, or to claim our place more fully than before. Those are the thoughts that have been flooding my mind over the last few weeks and with this intense full blue moon we have had.

Perhaps that is the most witchy thing about fennel. It doesn’t wait for an invitation. When the conditions are right, it grows exactly where it is meant to.

Now that this fennel plant has appeared outside our home, I am going to spend a few quiet moments sitting beside it. To listen, observe and ask what it has come to teach me. Then I will pay attention to the days that follow. Notice the thoughts that surface, the dreams that linger, the ideas that keep returning.

Plant spirits rarely shout; they whisper, and sometimes, those whispers arrive in the form of a fennel plant growing exactly where you need it most.
